Centenary UMC Chesterfield
1833 - On December 23, John R. and Martha Wake deeded to James Rowlett, Michael Vaden, Peter Boisseau and John Haskins, trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church, ½ acre to establish a church, which came to be known as Walkes' Chapel. This ½ acre stands to the rear of 11601 Winterpock Road, and is still deeded to the United Methodist Church. 1873 - The building (or congregation) was moved from "Physic Hill" about 1 ½ miles away to the mining community of Winterpock to a parcel of land donated by Judge James H. Cox. 1890 - The building was enlarged to meet the needs at that time and, in October of that year, it was dedicated under the pastorate of Dr. George Booker. This building was in use until 1915. The board of trustees, Adelbert Taylor, Charles T. Henley, V.G. Traylor,Walter Jayne, and others with pastor Edgar Davis voted to build a new Church. In order not to disrupt services, the old church which stood directly in front of the new church was not demolished until the new one was finished. 1916 - Construction of the new church was begun and then completed in 1918.The church was either named Clover Hill Chapel or was referred to by this name. We cannot be sure as to when the name Centenary came into use. 1917 - Miss Meta Cox presented the church with a bible that is still in the Church, but is only on display. The furniture in the church war made by the inmates at the State Penitentiary. 1939 - Electric lights were installed. 1947 - Mr. John Eagles gave 1 acre of land as an addition to the cemetery. 1949 In November, four classrooms were added. 1952 - During the summer, an oil heat furnace was installed. 1963 - In August, the church building was moved while a basement was being dug and the building then moved back over the basement. The addition was dedicated May 31, 1964 under the pastorate of P. S. Boyer. 1979 - In June, Centenary became a station church with the Reverend Leon Lawrence appointed as pastor. A parsonage at 11270 Celtic road was purchased. 2005- The parking area of the church expanded. 2006- February 15, paving of the parking lot underway and completed on February 24th. |
